Before burn and dodge...
After burn and dodge...
When editing this with the burn tool in photoshop I used a brush size of about 130 and the hardness at zero. I changed the exposure to 20 and started by doing the shadows of the tree and then the midtones. I wanted the tree to contrast against the light background and light color of his skin. I then went over the shadows beneath the leaves and brought the exposure down to 8. Next I turned the exposure back up to about 30 to go over the the midtones and highlights of the piece of wood in the corner to make it not be such a focus. I used the dodge tool to highlight his face with a brush size of 120 and the exposure at 8. I went over the shadows, midtones, and highlights and made his face a little bit lighter. I also did the same to his arms and hands to make them contrast slightly better against the darker tree. Lastly, I made the brush about 200 and went over the dark spot behind the tree to make it less noticeable.
